2015 has come and gone, unfortunately 2015 was not one of the better years for the sport of professional wrestling. With that said, that doesn’t mean there weren’t people that shined more than others. So here is a quick look back at some of the best of the best in 2015…
Male Wrestler of the Year
The best of 2015 was Seth Rollins! Seth cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase during the main event of WrestleMania 31 to become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion for the first time. At SummerSlam this year Seth Rollins defeated WWE United States Champion John Cena to be the first person to ever hold the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and WWE United States Championship at the same time. Seth would go on to hold the WWE WHC for 221 days until he tore the ACL, MCL, and medial meniscus in his knee and the WWE had to vacate the title. We hope for a speedy recovery for Seth Rollins in 2016!
Female Wrestler of the Year
There might have been a “Divas Revolution” in the WWE this year but NXT is where the true revolution shined the brightest. Who showed they were the best in NXT in 2015? None other than the boss herself Sasha Banks! Sasha would hold the NXT Women’s Championship from February to August. Sasha would lose the title to Bayley at NXT Takeover Brooklyn in what can only be described as the match of the year. The year of Sasha would continue in October when her and Bayley would main event NXT Takeover Respect in a 30 minute Iron Man match. Now that she is on the main roster Sasha’s legend can only continue to grow! Here is to 2016 being the year of Sasha on the main roster!
Announcer of the Year
In the WWE announcing has become a lost art, we have constant 3 man announce teams that talk endlessly about nothing. When New Japan Pro-Wrestling started on AXS TV in January 2015 the announce team quickly shined as they were doing legit announcing play by play for the matches. Not only did Mauro Ranallo educate us on the wrestlers in the ring but called the action as it happened… What a concept! Apparently I was not the only one who noticed Mauro Ranallo’s talent as WWE went knocking on his door and Ranallo became the lead announcer on SmackDown in 2016.
Promotion of the Year
New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW)
I can’t say that NJPW hasn’t had many great years in the past because I don’t know a lot about their history. However, in 2015 I constantly heard about NJPW. In January Global Force Wrestling helped NJPW air their January 4th Wrestle Kingdom 9 not only just in the United States but all over the world. GFW brought in Jim Ross and Matt Striker to call the english commentary. Later that month NJPW debuted its first program in the United States on AXS TV. The original 13 episode run produced numbers so well that AXS TV renewed the show for the rest of 2015 and all of 2016. Of course what helped the show was the English commentary team of Mauro Ranallo and Josh Barnett.
