Another month of NXT has gone by and this could be one of the biggest months in the history of NXT. This month saw NXT sell out the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for this months Takeover special and giving NXT its largest attendance of 15,589. This is HUGE as the NXT brand continues to grow. As I always say NXT is something special to watch and just when I think it can’t get any better it does.
The match of the month was easily Bayley vs. Sasha Banks for the NXT Women’s Championship in Brooklyn. Bayley finally won the big match of her career and maybe now will be seen more as a talent than sideshow character. I swear that every takeover fans say that the women’s match was the best NXT has ever produced, I’m not upset over that statement I just have to give the women of NXT credit as constantly raising the bar.
One of my complaints this month is NXT missing the boat with the tag team championship match. The Vaudevillains aren’t a bad tag team but I think the hottest tag team in NXT right now is Enzo & Cass. If you watched the last episode of NXT this month Enzo and Cass kicked off the show and the ovation was thunderous! This should’ve been the moment for Enzo and Cass to continue their feud with Blake and Murphy and get their moment in Brooklyn. If Enzo and Cass ever do win the NXT Tag Team Championship the ovation I’m sure will be big but not nearly as what it would’ve been for them in Brooklyn. The Vaudevillains to me just felt like they were given then tag team titles just like Blake and Murphy were. In this case I would’ve rather seen Blake and Murphy continue to grow as a team with the titles than The Vaudevillains winning them.
It is rumored that NXT releases could be coming soon, usually this is NXT talent that are training and not on the NXT TV roster. However I have a few NXT TV talent releases that I would like to recommend:
- Dana – After a few months on the NXT roster I haven’t seen much improvement from Dana and I don’t think she will get much better.
- Eva Marie – See above about Dana.
- Bull Dempsey – At first Bull was positioned to be a force in NXT, but he has already been downgraded to comical jobber. If he is already in this position in NXT I can’t imagine him ever being on the main roster.
- Rich Brennan – Rich is an announcer on NXT and I have really begun to hate his commentary. Basically Rich is Michael Cole Jr in my opinion. I’m sure this is because Michael Cole helps train the announcers which is a horrible decision. After Brooklyn it was announced that Rich will be added to the SmackDown announce team, I just hope this means he will be removed from NXT.
As I mentioned above I am not a fan of Rich Brennan, which leads me to my last point this month- the NXT announce team needs a shakeup! I really like Corey Graves on the announce team but I don’t think Rich Brennan or Byron Saxton offer anything to the product. Here are a few options to better the NXT announce team:
- Corey Graves and Renee Young
- Corey Graves and Joey Styles
- Corey Graves and Paul Heyman
I would be ok with any of these or any combo. For some reason WWE is really high on a 3 man announce team these days, but I think NXT would be better off with going back to 2. NXT had used Renee Young before but took her off for some reason, I don’t think she was given enough time. If Renee Young is put back on the announce team I think it would only be logical that her and Corey would be the future of the WWE announce team.
If NXT really wants a shake up I recommend Joey Styles being promoted to lead announcer. The huge plus side is that Joey wouldn’t have to travel to Orlando, NXT could tape the episodes in Orlando and then Joey could do commentary on tape delay at HQ with Corey. The only time Joey would have to travel is for the live takeover specials which I can’t imagine he would complain about. Joey was at the NYC and Philly NXT events over the summer and really praised the brand which I think would be the best fit for him in the WWE.
My dream WWE RAW announce team for the future is Paul Heyman and Renee Young. I think Paul has the most to offer the young commentators and him and Renee have worked really well together on past network events. Granted for the time being Paul will be used with Brock Lesnar, but for the time that Brock isn’t on TV I think Paul would be great in NXT. A huge plus to Paul Heyman in NXT is he can offer advice to young talent, a huge plus for Paul would also be that Vince McMahon wouldn’t be in his ear for commentary.
That is it for this month’s NXT wrap up, a lot of great things and looking forward to September where we will see the NXT Tag Team division shine with the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Tournament and more leading up to the next Takeover event in October.
