A lot of big news to discuss this month from NXT, it really is becoming the star brand in WWE. Lets start with Finn Balor… on July 4th during the Beast in the East WWE Network special Finn Balor defeated Kevin Owens to become the brand new NXT Champion. The match was focused on wrestling, which was nice since the past 2 matches with Kevin Owens against Sami Zayn were more fights than wrestling. Rumors are already started that Finn Balor isn’t too far from arriving on the WWE main roster. I enjoy Finn Balor on NXT, but I’m still not 100% sold on him that he is ready for the main roster. My biggest complaint is that I’m not a fan of his finishing move the coup de grâce (diving double foot stomp). If the CDG was used as a set up move I think I would be more ok with that but I feel like Finn needs a power move or something technical to really sell him as different from Hideo Itami (and that can be used vice versa for Hideo needing some work upon his return as well).

Kevin Owens stock continued to rise in the WWE during July. This month on the main roster it looked like Kevin and John Cena have had their last match (at least for the time being) when Cena defeated Owens at Battleground. I honestly expected Owens to walk away United States Champion, but I guess it wasn’t in the cards. Many question that now that Owens is done with Cena that his stock may dip, it looks like we may get an Owens vs. Cesaro match at SummerSlam which makes me hold my judgment on Owens main roster future until after this match.

Over on the NXT brand we continue to see a feud between Samoa Joe and Kevin Owens, I’m not sure how much weight this feud has now that Kevin Owens is no longer NXT Champion but I guess it started so they have to finish. I expect Samoa Joe to be in the title picture not long after his feud with Owens is over.

Other NXT talent with their stock continuing to rise is Charlotte, Becky Lynch and NXT Women’s Champion Sasha Banks. On July 13th these 3 women debuted on the main roster officially as part of a new “divas revolution” on the main roster. Charlotte & Becky are teamed with Paige, while Sasha is teamed with Naomi and Tamina as TEAM B.A.D. (Beautiful And Dangerous) and both groups are feuding with Team Bella (Nikki, Brie & Alicia Fox). The whole point of the divas revolution is to give Nikki some competition. I think Sasha has proven to be a huge asset to the main roster as her team really lacks mic skills and she is really helping on that end. Sasha just has this star presence about her that I hope continues to shine. Charlotte was almost instantly loved by the crowd which is a very good thing for her future. Becky is a fan favorite too, but out of the 3 I think Becky still needs to stay in NXT for a bit to help continue to develop.

Now onto a topic I never thought I would discuss… Eva Marie made her NXT wrestling debut this month. The match itself wasn’t awful, which surprised me. It wasn’t a five star match by any means but I didn’t hate it. The first thing that needs work is Eva’s entrance, all she basically did was walk down the ramp. She needs to play to the crowd a little more. I didn’t like Eva using the “slice bread #2” finisher in her debut, it was executed great which means she still needs some work on it. Eva should’ve had a back up finisher for this match. The only way for Eva Marie to go is up, because if she doesn’t I don’t think she will stick around long. I will give Eva Marie credit, I liked her debut better than Dana Brooke’s…

2 bright spots to the month are Jason Jordan and Elias Samson. Jason Jordan has been on the main roster for a while now and has been looking for a new tag team partner. Jason Jordan is being used as a collegiate athlete and just isn’t really being given a strong gimmick push. I think Jordan is talented and I don’t want to see him get lost in the shuffle. This month he seemed to be on a good win streak with new tag team partner Chad Gable, hopefully it continues. Elias Samson might not be a strong name you remember this month but I knew him better on the Pittsburgh independent scene as Logan Shulo and seeing him finally on NXT was pretty exciting after he has been down there for over a year. Samson is being used in a tag team that is mostly just enhancement but I’m hoping that the more appearances on NXT the more he will impress NXT officials.

Sami Zayn returned for one night to give an update on his future. Sami seems to think he will be out of action for the remainder of 2015. This is a shame as Sami’s stock was sky high when he was injured. Hopefully when Sami returns he can pick up where he left off. A big thing once Sami returns is how quick he gets called up to the main roster, because if he does I hope Sami is planning on a gimmick change while he is off. He has plenty of time to think of something new and different. The NXT gimmick works on NXT being a world wide independent wrestler, but he will need something a little different to make a name for himself.
